Each year UMS hosts an enriching summer program with different themes that strive to incorporate the Montessori practices of grace, courtesy, and respect. For our 2017 Summer Program, we have a memorable, fun, and enriching summer planned.
We are excited to offer the following programs:
Science & Nature
Join us for cool experiments for hot summer days. We will explore forces and phenomena that are all around us all the time. We will sharpen our observation skills, ask why, set up experiments to test our ideas, and see what we find! Our woodsy setting affords ample opportunity to explore the wonders of nature. We will have fun learning about the ecology of our everyday world as we garden, notice climate and weather, and check out the tiny creatures all around us.
May 30 – June 2 & June 5 – June 9
Art is a great way for all of us to see the world in our own way and express ourselves! This session will provide plenty of opportunity to look at art, talk about art, learn about artists and materials, and of course, make plenty of art! From painting to sculpture, let’s get those creative juices flowing!
June 12 – June 16 & June 19 – June 23
Move to the Music!
Clean out your ears and open your eyes, listen to the music and come alive! We will sing and dance together, exploring the world of music through song and expressive movement. Get ready for some very special guests as we explore as many genres of music as we can t into two weeks, and we’ll get our groove on while doing it!
June 26 – June 30 & July 3 – July 7 (no camp on July 4)
Around the World
Consider UMS your new travel agent! Join us for the adventure of “traveling” around the world in two weeks. Each day we will visit a different country, exploring foods, music and songs, art, language, and traditions. We’ll learn how other children all over the world are spending their summers and what makes their corner of the world unique.
July 10 – July 14 & July 17 – July 21
For several years now the Japanese School of Charlottesville has provided us knowledge and support for this very special theme. We explore the culture of Japan through language, songs, folk tales, food, crafts, calligraphy, and more.
July 24 – July 28 & July 31 – 4
Each session of the Summer Program is designed to appeal to every child. The sessions are lightly themed, so that we will broadly focus on a topic, but within that topic children will be doing a range of activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, music and movement, literature, science experiments, etc. This structure will be present throughout each session. Throughout the summer, we strive to incorporate the Montessori practices of grace, courtesy, and respect.
Our graduated kindergarteners are invited to join us for the first session (Science & Nature) of the season. Our newly enrolled friends are invited to join us beginning with the second session (Artistic Impressions) through the end of the summer. Children ages 3 through 5 (pre-kindergarten only) are eligible for the Summer Program. It is expected that children use the toilet independently.
We open registration for children currently or newly enrolled at UMS for the fall, and then registration will be open to eligible children from the community, and space is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
We hope you join us for this special time of year!
